Ecosystem-based Adaptation

Nature can provide many services for human societies, amongst them: the mitigation of climate change impacts, reduction of disaster and enhancement of overall resilience of societies. Part of these so-called “Nature-based Solutions” are the EbA approaches: Ecosystem-based Adaptation embrace measures such as the plantation of drought resilient crop species, hedges to avoid erosion, mangroves to reduce wave impacts, or coral reef management to avoid beach erosion. Increasingly EbA is gaining attention, either as stand-alone solution, or in combination with engineered / technical solutions (‘hybrid’ measures).
Since climate change has become more of a development issue, there is a need to mainstream climate change adaptation into national planning as part of broader policies for development. Societal awareness about the potential and importance of functioning ecosystems is growing, as is the political will to consider nature-based options in planning and decision making. Multiple entry points for mainstreaming have been identified throughout a global study, commissioned by GIZ in five countries (Philippines, Vietnam, South Africa, Mexico and Peru), where planners and decision-makers become more aware of the opportunities and potentials that these approaches provide in face of the challenges.

The series is published by the GIZ on behalf of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU).
